SAFETY AND TECHNICAL UPGRADE OF THE KARAVANKE RAILWAY TUNNEL
The Slovenian-Austrian Karavanke Tunnel, which is almost 8 kilometres long, is an important cross-border link on the Munich–Salzburg–Ljubljana–Thessaloniki railway line.
The tunnel was put into operation in 1906. It was in a very poor state of repair due to its age, and the tunnel equipment did not meet modern standards for traffic safety and fire safety on European core networks.
The safety and technical upgrade included the removal of the double-track and the construction of a single-track line in the tunnel, the rehabilitation of damaged parts of the structure, the arrangement of drainage and the overhead contact line, the construction of an intervention corridor, signalling safety and telecommunication devices, systems to ensure the fire safety of railway traffic, and safe and efficient rescue in the event of accidents.
AS PART OF THE SAFETY AND TECHNICAL
UPGRADING OF THE TUNNEL, A DOUBLE-TRACK LINE HAS BEEN REMOVED AND A NEW SINGLE-TRACK LINE HAS BEEN BUILT.
